General Summary of Position MedStar Health is seeking experienced Inpatient Coding Specialists who are self-motivated and have at least 3 years of inpatient acute care coding experience with knowledge in MS-DRG and/or APR-DRG. Qualified candidates must hold a CCS (Certified Coding Specialist) certification through AHIMA. Selected candidates will enjoy a full-time, Monday - Friday, day-shift REMOTE schedule. Job Summary Codes and abstracts primarily inpatient acute care records using ICD-10-CM/PCS and other relevant patient classification schemes. #LI-remote Primary Duties and Responsibilities Abstracts and ensures accuracy of diagnoses, procedures, patient demographics, and other data elements. Adheres to all compliance regulations and maintains annual compliance education. Maintains continuing education and seeks ongoing learning opportunities to improve performance. Maintains necessary credentials. Contacts physicians when conflicting or ambiguous information appears in the medical record, following the MedStar Coding Query Policy. Meets established quality standards as defined by policies. Meets productivity standards as defined by policies. Resolves all quality reviews promptly, including medical necessity reviews, coding quality assurance reviews, and external vendor reviews. Reviews medical records to identify diagnoses and procedures, assigns correct codes using standard guidelines and automated software, and determines diagnosis sequences according to hospital data definitions, assigning appropriate DRGs. Exhibits knowledge of the 3M system and other relevant equipment. Minimum Qualifications Education High School Diploma or GED required; an associate or bachelor’s degree in a related field is preferred. Courses in Medical Terminology, Anatomy & Physiology, ICD-CM, and ICD-PCS are required. Experience 3-4 years inpatient coding experience required. Experience with clinical information systems (e.g., 3M grouper, electronic medical records, computer-assisted coding) is preferred. Licenses and Certifications CCS (Certified Coding Specialist) required. RHIT (Registered Health Information Technician) and/or RHIA (Registered Health Information Administrator) preferred.
