Hiring Department Division of Information Technology Job Description The University of Missouri is enhancing its research capabilities by providing access to cloud-based quantum computing resources (as an IBM Quantum Innovation Center) alongside existing High Performance Computing (HPC) cluster resources. The Technical Lead for HPC and Quantum Services will oversee the development, implementation, and maintenance of HPC and quantum computing services within the university. The responsibilities include: Leading teams managing and supporting HPC systems and integration with cloud-based quantum systems to ensure high availability and performance. Overseeing personnel involved in research facilitation and user support for these systems. Collaborating with faculty, researchers, and IT staff to identify needs and develop solutions to enhance research capabilities. Working with peers across the University of Missouri System and external institutions. Staying informed of advancements in quantum computing and HPC to foster innovation and maintain competitiveness. Providing technical expertise for acquiring new quantum and HPC hardware and software. Representing the university at conferences and workshops to share knowledge and learn from peers. Shift Monday - Friday, 8 am - 5 pm, with some flexibility; occasional weekends or after-hours work may be necessary for system support. Minimum Qualifications A foundational understanding of quantum computing, HPC infrastructure, and the research landscape is required. Proficiency in at least one area (HPC or quantum computing) with familiarity in the other is essential. Bachelor’s degree in technology, computer science, physics, or related fields, or equivalent experience. Ability to learn programming languages, operating systems, research workflows, and emerging technologies. Understanding of data security and privacy regulations relevant to quantum and HPC operations. Ability to troubleshoot and resolve system issues quickly. Knowledge of systems analysis techniques. Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and on-call as needed. Ability to work under pressure and handle challenging interactions professionally. This position can be on-premises or hybrid, typically with 1-2 days on-site weekly. Transportation to/from campus is not reimbursed. Preferred Qualifications Three years of HPC system administration or two years with quantum computing; leadership experience in a technical team for two or more years. Anticipated Hiring Range Salary: $65,000 - $125,000, commensurate with experience. Title: System Administrator (internal applicants can verify their title via the Talent Profile in myHR).
