In this role, you’ll be instrumental in building and maintaining high-performance, distributed backend services using cutting-edge tools like Akka (or Pekko), Kafka, and the Play Framework. You'll architect systems based on event sourcing principles, implement streaming data pipelines, and ensure observability and operational excellence. This position is ideal for someone who thrives in complex backend environments and has a passion for building resilient, scalable infrastructure in the cloud. What You’ll Do Reactive Scala Development Design and implement backend services using Scala and the Play Framework, delivering high-quality RESTful and asynchronous HTTP APIs. Develop distributed, resilient systems using Akka (or Pekko), including Cluster Sharding and Streams for scalability and fault tolerance. Architect solutions using event sourcing and Command Query Responsibility Segregation (CQRS) to ensure consistency and traceability across microservices. Event Streaming and Messaging Integrate Kafka for event-driven communication across services, enabling real-time data processing and service orchestration. Manage Kafka topics, schemas, and consumers with an emphasis on performance, observability, and scale. Design services that are reactive, loosely coupled, and support high throughput messaging patterns. Cloud-Native Operations Containerize services with Docker and manage deployments on Kubernetes (EKS preferred), ensuring reliability and self-healing across environments. Leverage AWS services (e.g., EC2, S3, EKS, IAM) to deploy, monitor, and scale backend systems with automation and best practices. Apply infrastructure-as-code (e.g., Terraform, Helm) to support repeatable and consistent deployments. Observability and Production Readiness Implement robust observability using tools like Prometheus, Grafana, and OpenTelemetry to monitor system health and application metrics. Build alerting strategies and dashboards to enable proactive incident detection and response. Ensure production services meet SLAs for uptime, latency, and reliability. What You Bring 5+ years of professional backend development experience, with strong proficiency in Scala. Deep knowledge of Akka or Pekko, including HTTP, Cluster Sharding, and Streams. Hands-on experience with the Play Framework in production environments. Expertise in Kafka-based architectures and event sourcing patterns. Proficient in containerization with Docker and orchestration using Kubernetes. Familiarity with AWS services such as EKS, EC2, IAM, and S3. Strong understanding of observability principles and experience with modern monitoring stacks. Knowledge of CI/CD principles and infrastructure-as-code tooling is a plus.
