The County of San Luis Obispo's Parks and Recreation Department is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Equipment Mechanic to manage our fleet of golf course machinery. The Equipment Mechanic plays a critical role in the efficiency and effectiveness of the golf course maintenance operations, directly contributing to the quality playing conditions and overall golf course experience. Typical Tasks and Representative Duties Maintain a clean, organized, and safe shop environment Inspect and locate mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic defects in golf course maintenance equipment including mowers, tractors, sprayers, trucks, utility vehicles, and other types of specialized mechanical equipment used in golf course operations, grounds maintenance, and construction Perform major and minor mechanical repairs, including general overhauls Replace and reassemble transmissions and differentials, hydraulic and electrical systems Reline and adjust brakes Rebuild and sharpen mower cutting units Perform equipment safety inspections Change and repair tires Weld Keep maintenance records Manage inventory of parts, supplies, and tools for adequate stock and cost-effective procurement Provide training and guidance to staff and volunteers Manage proper handling and/or disposal of all lubricants, chemicals, and other hazardous materials Ensure regulatory compliance Operate equipment as required Assist in other duties as assigned Employment Standards Knowledge of: The operating principles of automotive, grounds maintenance, and construction equipment; the methods, equipment, and tools required in the repair of automotive, grounds maintenance, and construction equipment. Ability to: Diagnose mechanical troubles; use sound judgment; operate trucks and construction equipment; work cooperatively with others; use the methods, equipment, and tools required in the repair of automotive, grounds maintenance, and construction equipment. Stand for long periods of time; lift and move heavy objects up to 100 pounds; use explosive force to break loose parts or move heavy items; bend or stoop repeatedly; perform other physical demands of heavy equipment repair. Education and Experience A combination of education, training, and experience resulting in the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. An example of qualifying education and experience includes: Graduation from high school or a GED certificate; and one year of journey worker experience in the maintenance, repair, and overhaul of automotive and construction equipment, including experience in arc and gas welding. Licenses and Certificates A valid driver's license is required at the time of application. A valid CALIFORNIA driver's license is required at the time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment. Possession of a Class A CALIFORNIA driver's license is required by the end of the six-month probationary period. Certification by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) and/or other recognized certifications will be required when the certification is required for performance of job duties.
